Pilgrim Badges

Medieval badges were worn by pilgrims as evidence of their journey to a shrine. The scallop is the symbol of St James, the patron saint of pilgrims. Metal badges featuring the scallop or adorned with images of genitals, were worn with the belief that they ward off plague and other evil.
